The marketing gurus sold you lies (sorry Gary V)

Gary V’s a cool dude, but he’s wrong about one thing:

He says “you’re the niche”.

But you’re not (yet).

Lemme explain…

The most common mistake for new creators trying to grow their personal brand is the same one I made 3 years ago.

All because I believed “the niche is you”.

You see, my first Twitter account was a total dud.

I had taken a course that told me to create broad content to appeal to everyone.

It sounded like a good idea at the time, but it completely backfired.

Following this bad advice, I made an account called “Philosophy of Fit” (super cringe, I know) and posted about fitness, philosophy, and a bunch of cheesy self-help stuff.

And after 3 months of posting 5 times a day, I had only grown to 750 followers.

A ‘viral’ post for me was 11 likes.

I didn’t understand what I was doing wrong.

And it was humiliating to see new creators blow right past me.

But that all changed when I hopped on a call with a guy who grew from 0 to 1000 followers in just 30 days.

What was he doing differently?

He taught niche copywriting skills and didn’t focus on anything else.

And that’s when I saw the difference between me and him:

While he was teaching his audience skills that could make them money

I was posting vague ‘fortune cookie’ platitudes and praying someone would care.

That’s when I realized:

I first had to give value to be valued by others.

So I started a new social media account and focused on writing tips.

This time it only took me 40 days to grow to 1000 followers.

This goes against what big creators like Gary V tell beginners on social media…

Because the only reason Gary V can post ‘believe in yourself’ and get 20,000 likes…(while a random person posting the same exact thing doesn’t get any)…is because he spent years growing his personal brand in a very specific niche before ever going broad.

And he’s not the only one.

All big influencers start narrow, then go broad later on:

• Gary V had a wine channel for years

• Alex Hormozi started teaching sales tactics

• Iman Gadzhi was one of the early SMMA experts

So the moral of the story is that “the niche is you” and posting broad content only works if people already know, like, and trust you.

But you get that to happen by providing value and demonstrating competence first.

So if you only remember one thing when you’re starting out on social media, it should be this:

People only care about what’s in it for them.

And one last thing:

Everybody says ‘just give value, bro’...

But nobody tells you what that means.

So, let’s fix that real quick:

My definition of value is anything that solves people’s problems or moves them closer to their desired outcome.

When you do that, you put the game on easy mode.

Do this consistently over a long enough time, and you’ll grow your brand while building a profitable business on the back of it.

Now go out there and write some banger posts.
