How to stand out on social media
Your unfair advantage
In this email, I’m gonna share one of the most important things when it comes to building your personal brand.
This will become your unfair advantage.
An unfair advantage you can use to stand out from every other copy/paste creator on social media.
And no, I’m not going to tell you to:
Post every day
Learn copywriting
Lather yourself in baby oil and start twerking to trending audio
Although those things can help…
But I’m talking about something different:
The thing that makes you different.
Lemme explain:
So a few months ago, I was talking to 15-year-old kid…

BUT IN A TOTALLY NON WEIRD WAY.
He DM’d me asking for advice about how to grow his personal brand and build a writing business online.
I could see he put a lot of thought in his message, so I hopped on a call with him.
And a big focus on that call was how to stand out online (especially since he was young and didn’t have much experience to share).

Now, many would see being young and inexperienced as a disadvantage…
But I saw this as a huge advantage.
Think about it:
How many 15-year-old kids are creating content and building a business?
I don’t know about you, but when I was 15 I was jerking off and playing Call of Duty 24/7.
What this kid was doing was unusual.
And unusual = interesting.
I remember hearing Naval Ravikant talk about this on Joe Rogan’s podcast many years ago:
I think the reason why people like hearing me is because it’s like if you go to a circus and you see a bear, right? That’s kind of interesting but not that much. If you see a unicycle, that’s interesting. But you see a bear on a unicycle, that’s really interesting, right? So, when you combine things you’re not supposed to combine — people get interested. It’s like Bruce Lee, right? Striking thoughts, philosophy, plus martial arts.
And this is how you should think about your personal brand.
What are the unusual things about you that you can lean into with your content?
Take me for example:
I look like a meathead Chad, so I lean into being a “Jacked Nerd”
Most creators are serious, so I lean into my dark humor
Most writers post platitudes, so I lean into stories (but also some cheesy platitudes lol)
A good way to find your unfair advantage is to simply as yourself questions.
What do you nerd out on?
What are your obsessions?
What’s unusual about you?
What do people know you for?
How do you think about things differently than most?
What experiences have you had that most people haven’t?
Blah, blah, blah.
You get the idea.
Find things that make you different and start using it in your content.
That’s your unfair advantage that’ll make you stand out from the rest.
Lean into your weirdness to win.
All the best.
Your Canadian friend,
Dakota “Jacked Nerd” Robertson
