Can you see me?
Invisible forces influence us every day.
We can’t:
See them
Hear them
Touch them
But they’re there.
And no, I’m not talking about demonic forces influencing us to hate pineapple pizza (although I’m sure that’s going on too).
I’m talking about the invisible effect of content.
Just like it influences us, the content we put out also influences others.
Now, the way we normally measure the success of our content is through visible data:
Likes
Comments
Followers
And sure, those are nice…
But there’s actually something more powerful we often miss:
The emotional state our content triggers in our viewers.
Lemme give ya an example…
With my recent cohort launch, I jumped on 1 on 1 welcome calls with everyone who joined.
And after taking 100+ of these calls in the past year, there’s something I heard over and over that stood out.
Many of the people who joined said they’ve been consuming my content for 3 months, 8 months, or even years.
Most of which I had never interacted with.
But many said the reason they joined wasn’t because I gave out a ton of value.
And yes, that helped…
But the main reason they joined was because they resonated with my story and who I was.
And that’s important to touch on.
Most gurus just tell you to “Give value” to grow your following and make sales.
But they never talk about creating connection with your audience.
They tell you to talk about how great you are and to flex your accomplishments.
But they never talk about being vulnerable in your content.
And if you were to compare the visible data of the content, those gurus would be correct.
However, it’s often the content that gets the least amount of likes that has the greatest effect.
Because there’s always going to be someone who creates more valuable content than you (there sure in the hell is a ton more people that know more than me).
So sure, if you want to build a following, just create “valuable content”.
But if you want to build a brand?
Include content that shares your humanity.
Share your failures
Talk about your insecurities
Show your rough edges
As you can see below, my worst content is when I talk about life topics and share parts of my story:

However, this is the content that creates true connection with my audience.

So although I don’t see much of an effect on my follower count or likes…
I know it’s creating connection.
So, my friend, just wanted to give ya the reminder to not measure your entire success on the standard metrics.
What you can’t see is just as important.
Your Canadian friend,
Dakota “Invisible” Robertson
