Blue pill or red pill?

“Would you rather take the blue pill…or the red bill?

The man stared directly into my eyes as he presented me with 2 choices…

The pills he offered me would dictate my future.

And what I’m gonna present to you will change yours.

2 choices that can be the difference between 2024 being just another year of:

• The same habits

• The same old routine

• And ultimately, the same results

Or…

A year where you make the most transformative shifts in your life.

One where you look back on the year at who you are and barely recognize yourself from all the progress you made.

Now, before I tell you what these pills are, let’s clear something up…

It wasn’t a man in a black trench coat named Morpheus offering these 2 pills.

And no, I wasn’t at a music festival being offered any magic pills by some coked out drug dealer.

The man was a hypnotherapist.

He hit me up in the Twitter DMs the other week briefly talking about his services.

I was intrigued and had some stuff I wanted to work on, so I hopped on an intro call with him.

He had an uplifting energy and seemed like my kinda crazy, so I paid for a few sessions with him.

I just finished up the first session and wanted to share a new way of thinking that’ll be useful for ya going into the new year

This Will Dictate Your Life

The hypnotherapist talked about 2 categories dictate what motivates us in life.

You, me, and everyone in the world fall into 1 of 2 categories.

Now, if you’re like me, your default is category 1.

Category 1 is when your primary motivation is to move away from pain.

Here’s what I mean by that…

I used to be chubby from the ages of 10-13.

A “Chubby chunker” as one kid pointed out to me.

I binge ate double stuffed Oreos and my escape from life was playing video games for 10+ hours a day.

And when you combine the 2?

You have the perfect recipe for B cup man boobies.

Sure, I didn’t like how I looked, but I didn’t make a change.

Because I was comfortable enough with where I was at in life.

Until I experienced one of the most humiliating days of my life…

The Day I Decided To Stop Being Fat

I scribbled away as my middle-school math teacher was teaching a lesson on the whiteboard to the class.

But halfway through the presentation, the teacher paused for a moment.

And during that silence was when everyone heard it…

A kid in the back of class whispering to someone next to him.

All everyone heard was, “Dakota…that fat kid.”

I felt everyone’s eyes lock on me in the middle of the class.

My faced burned red with embarrassment.

My eyes welled up from a mix of hurt, anger, and sadness.

I felt like I was alone on an island and everyone was staring at me naked.

Reality b*tch slapped me in the face with the cold, hard hand of truth about what people were saying about me behind my back.

And it was one of the best things to ever happen to me.

Because that moment of humiliation was my point of maximum pain.

It drove me to change my life.

I started waking up at 5am and going to YMCA exercise bootcamps before school.

I replayed that moment over in my head as fuel to exercise like I was possessed.

Each squat, pushup, and burpee was a step away from the identity I wanted to kill.

It was my “Chad” origin story.

Now, I’m not telling you this because I’m trying to funnel you to my $69.99 OnlyFans subscription.

I tell you this because you might not be so lucky…

Lucky enough to be bullied and use your fat-kid PTSD as fuel to change.

If it wasn’t for that humiliation, I’m not sure if I would have been as driven to make the change.

And I just wanna level with you for a sec…

If you’re honest with yourself, you’ve probably too comfortable in some area of life right now.

Maybe you’re working a job that pays the bills, but doesn’t fulfill you.

Maybe you’re in a stable relationship, but don’t feel truly connected to the person.

Maybe you’re in okay shape, but you don’t feel confident when you take your shirt off.

Many people are on autopilot and never make a change because they never reach that big pain point.

Next thing they know, they’re at the end of their lives and looking back on it with regret.

Hell, even if you use your pain as fuel in life, you can get stuck in a dangerous trap.

(And this is where the hypnotherapist blew my mind…)

He explained that the subconscious guide your actions based on your goal.

So if your entire motivation is based upon moving away from pain…

What happens when you get away from that pain?

You’re stuck in the middle of nowhere without a map to guide you forward.

And because your subconscious has nothing to move toward, it reverts you back to the path you came by sabotaging your progress.

It does this so you can once again fulfill the subconscious goal of moving away from the pain.

For example…

There have been many times I would gain weight, then build momentum and lose it.

Only to quickly sabotage myself by “rewarding myself” with junk food.

Or I would make a ton of progress with my business, then sabotage myself by procrastinating and playing video games.

My only driver was moving away from pain, so I’d have to create the pain to motivate myself.

But the hypnotherapist made me realize there’s a better way.

A way to get off this never-ending hamster wheel.

A way to not only achieve our goals, but sustain them and achieve bigger ones.

And that’s where the 2nd option comes in…

Taking The Red Pill

So the 1st category of people are those who move away from pain.

Now, you’ve probably guessed…

The 2nd category of people are those moving toward desire.

And the key difference between the 2 groups?

Moving away from pain can be a powerful motivator, but it’s limited to how far it’ll drive you if you get away from that pain.

But moving toward desire is like going on a journey to your goals with a compass.

You may confront difficult terrain and need to figure out how to get past it…

But you know where you need to go.

And this was the missing piece for me (and I think most people).

The goals I set were focused on getting away from my current/past situations, not focused enough on my ideal life that got me excited.

My fitness goals were my way to avoid feeling the pain of being made fun of.

My money goals were my way to avoid feeling the pain of working a job I hated.

Sure, it can be a great motivator, but what if we also had something to strive toward?

A north star to guide us.

So, my friend, I encourage you to do what I’m doing before the year ends.

Take 3-4 hours to sit down and describe what your ideal life looks like.

In 10 years.

In 3 years.

And the next 6 months.

Describe in vivid detail who’s in your life, your environment, how you feel, and your perfect day.

Anything along those lines.

Add pictures to the document and make it as real as possible.

This can dictate the rest of your year (and perhaps life) so take your damn sweet time on this.

I bet if you look back on this at the end of 2024, you’ll be glad you did.

Much love.

Your Canadian friend,

Dakota “Moving Toward” Robertson
