This 1 screw up cost me a client...

A $2000 mistake

Yesterday I had a colossal failure with my ghostwriting agency.

Basically, I told one person working for me to publish a thread for a client.

I told them to repurpose an old thread from a different client, since it was a topic that would fit well.

Only 1 problem…

When they repurposed the thread, they didn’t change the headline.

And this headline had a specific detail that went against everything the client had been saying for the past year.

So, upon waking up yesterday, I got a message from my client.

It said something along the lines of:

“Dakota, we appreciate the work you’ve done, and we’ve learned a lot from you, but the thread you put out today was flat out untrue and was directly against what we’ve been posting. Going forward you don’t need to post for us anymore, we’ll have it handled from here. Again, we appreciate you.”

My stomach felt like it had been hit by a truck.

Although we only had a couple days left in our contact, it hurt.

This was the first client I ever had end things early.

I pride myself on my reputation, and knowing it had been tainted was upsetting.

I was pissed off at my employee and pissed off at myself.

And although I hopped on a call with that employee and clarified I was upset, I didn’t blame them.

I blamed myself.

Because it was my fault.

In your business and life, you need to be accountable for everything.

If an employee makes a mistake…

Maybe you should’ve given better instructions

Maybe you should’ve had better systems in place.

Maybe you should’ve monitored the situation better.

It’ll hurt your ego, but it’s freeing.

Because when you take responsibility for what happened, you take control for what happens going forward.

Now I can learn from this and ensure it doesn’t happen again.

If I put the blame on my employee, then sure, I would’ve felt good, but nothing would change.

So, what am I doing to bounce back from this?

Well, this morning I hopped on a call with them and apologized personally.

I also will spend $2000 toward their Instagram and growing it by 5000+ followers.

I don’t need to, but I want to.

Because in business, your reputation and integrity are everything. And if there’s a way you can try to set things right, you should.

So, my friends, that’s all I got for ya today. Apologies for the delay in today’s newsletter too. Things got thrown off for me as of late!

Much love!

Your Canadian friend,

Dakota “I Got Some Wrongs To Right” Robertson
