Dancing like an idiot
It's dumb, but it works
The key to smart writing?
Dancing like an idiot.
Just a few minutes ago, it was 5:47am here in Panama and I was blasting the song “You Dropped A Bomb On Me” by The Gap Band and dancing like a maniac with my white boy dance moves.
Now, you might think to yourself this is Dakota being a potato (as usual), but there’s a method to my madness.
Lemme explain…
A few weeks ago, I was living with my good friend Nicholas Verge.
Mr. Verge is responsible for $30,000,000+ of sales with his copywriting.
And on one of the mornings before we hit a writing session, this man starts blasting upbeat music on his $800 speaker and starts dancing.
“DAKOTA, START DANCING!” he yells at me.
I’m confused, but I do it anyway.
While we’re both dancing to the music, he begins to explain to me…
“State change. This is the secret to all great creative writing. To channel a higher frequency in your writing, you need to get your body into a higher frequency. You need to MOVE.”
So for the next 3 minutes, we’re dancing like an absolute idiots.
And you know what?
We wrote some banger copy for the next hour after that.
Why Does Dancing Like an Idiot Work So Well For Writing?
Think of your mind as a stagnant pond:
• Still
• Unchanging
• Often devoid of life
When you dance to upbeat music, you’re transforming your mind from a pond into a flowing river.
The flow (state change) stirs the waters, introduces oxygen, and brings life.
And this isn’t some “woo woo” pseudoscience.
Studies have shown, moving your body oxygenates your brain and pumps blood throughout your body, which delivers nutrients to your brain that’s vital for creativity.
So, my friend, my challenge to you for before your next creative session is to throw on some music, bust out your robot dance, and go crazy for a few minutes.
I guarantee you’ll notice a huge difference in your thinking and creativity.
Maybe just make sure nobody is around with a phone to record you ;)
