AI will replace you

Writers are in trouble...

AI doesn’t get tired.

AI doesn’t get distracted.

AI doesn’t get writer’s block.

AI will replace you, as a writer…

If you’re replaceable.

You’re replaceable as a writer if you think the purpose of writing is to write.

But it’s not.

The writer’s job is to think.

Writing is just a mechanism to transfer one person’s thoughts to another.

The Evolution of Writing

Before the printing press, scribes had to tediously handwrite each manuscript.

But when the printing press was invented, the role of scribes evolved, and they needed to adapt to new skills, such as:

  • Proofreading

  • Editing

  • Typesetting

Similarly, as AI advances, traditional writing will be replaced by assembling pre-written content.

And just as the printing press demanded scribes to adapt and master new skills, writers in the AI era will need to become skilled at:

  • Storytelling

  • Persuasion

  • Psychology

But if you’re don’t understand the above skills, it doesn’t matter what Chat GPT spits out.

You won’t understand how to piece it together to achieve your desired effect.

And that’s why while everyone is saying it’s the end for writers, we should be doubling down on what humans connect with:

Thinking.

Learn to what makes ideas sticky (read the book, “Made to Stick”).

Learn how to tell stories so those ideas resonate (read the book, “Storyworthy”).

Learn how to persuade people to take an action (read the book, “Cashvertising”).

If you’re a writer, going forward, I want you to think of yourself as an orchestrator.

Your job isn’t to physically play the instruments, but to harmonize them to create music.

This only comes from a deep understanding of your craft.

Much love and happy Thursday.

Your Canadian friend,

Dakota “Making Music” Robertson
